Appreciation
əpriːʃɪˈeɪʃ(ə)n,əpriːsɪˈeɪʃ(ə)n
1. Recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something
This blog deals with people, not things.
The bane of our times; things are not in want of being appreciated, people are.
People: actually, are the only resource (apart from Customers) that matter.
They bring a treasure trove of learnings gleaned from years of experience. They deploy these learnings adapting them to the situation at hand and create magic.
Some data first.
According to studies:
79% of those who quit their jobs cite lack of appreciation as the main reason
81% of employees seldom or never received public praise
76% seldom or never received written thanks from their managers
58% rarely or never received praise from their manager
Gallup’s global research finds that employees around the world consistently express dissatisfaction with feedback and recognition.
HR is constantly being told that they are under-performing; attrition numbers are up while retention is down.
Attrition and retention are not simplistic concepts, there are serious issues at play here. And it would be presumptuous to think otherwise.
However, it is equally true that there are many an issue that have become “issues” that a small token of appreciation would not have nipped in the bud.
People walk into their workplace with the intention of succeeding, belonging, growing and receiving recognition for what they do.
And when they do add value to their organisation and succeed they crave recognition, appreciation from their managers and from their peers.
However, (and I speak from experience, here) all they receive is a terse nod or in most cases, abject silence.
So no wonder that all the vast resources and time spent on “Team Building Exercises”, “Employment Engagements”, “Festival Celebrations”, “Happy Hours”, “Financial Bonuses” are coming to nought. They are just not dealing with the issue and reaching people where they ought to.
Employees are people with emotions who feel and no amount of fanfare will substitute simple, heartfelt appreciation and sincerity.
Think about it!
